Prince’s ex wife, Mayte Garcia, is opening up about their marriage and the loss
of their son, Amiir, which happened more than 20 year ago.
Garcia gave an interview for People magazine for her new memoir, The Most
Beautiful: My Life with Prince, and talked about how Prince coped with the loss
of their child, who died of a rare genetic disorder.
“I don’t think he ever got over it,” Garcia told about it, “I don’t know how
anybody can get over it. I know I haven’t.”
The dancer was only 22 when she got pregnant with Prince’s child. She revealed
that one day she started bleeding and after that a doctor recommended an
amniocentesis to test for genetic abnormalities. But that had a risk of
miscarriage, so Prince who was against it.
According to Mayte, the ‘Purple Rain’ singer went on his knees to pray for the
baby’s health, but still more complications happened.
Talking about the day she gave birth, Prince’s wife recalls that he was super
happy. “I don’t know how to describe the look on my husband’s face. Pure joy,”
“And then they held the baby up to those harsh lights. The elation on my
husband’s face turned to pure terror.”
Garcia told that they brought the baby to them and that’s when they noticed his
problems. “He was curled on his side, gasping shallow little gulps of air. Because
there were no lids to blink, his eyes looked startled and dry. I caught hold of his
tiny hand, saying over and over, ‘Mama loves you, Mama’s here’”, she revealed.
Their newborn son Amiir went under several procedures, but unfortunately died
six days after his birth.
To this day Garcia admits that could be the main reason their marriage started
going downhill. She even reveals that she had thoughts of committing suicide.
